Set in Wales in Victorian times with a strong female protagonist it follows the story of Seren, an orphan who is sent to live in a big, remote house. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. On her solo journey to Wales, Seren is given a mysterious package to look after by a stranger and ends up feeling obliged to take it with her.

She is on her way to a new life at the remote house of Plas-y Fran, but when she gets there the happy family Christmas she had hoped for turns out to be an illusion. I wished we got to learn a bit more about her background, but maybe this happens later in the series. Auf der Zugfahrt träumt das Mädchen von ihrem neuen Leben, in einem behüteten Zuhause mit einer liebevollen Familie. it gives that air of significance and danger throughout and on meeting them, I felt quite unsettled (but not scared). There's a nice blend of mystery and spookiness and I like the classic fairytale-like quality of this book, with the added bonus of a sarcastic clockwork crow for comedic relief.Meine anfängliche Vermutung hat sich als goldrichtig erwiesen: Mir hat mein erstes Werk aus der Feder von Catherine Fisher tolle Lesestunden bereiten können. Catherine is an acclaimed poet and novelist, regularly lecturing and giving readings to groups of all ages.

I liked the mystery aspect of the story, Seren arriving to a house she expected to be grand and inviting, filled with family, and finding that her godfather and his wife had gone to London, with no explanation. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. It was a great opportunity to see the children so engaged throughout the whole performance – literally from start to finish – they were “ooh”ing, “ahh”ing, laughing and following the story in a way I don’t think they’d have done so well in a normal theatre experience, or reading of said story.Catherine's new adventures for 7 up are The Clockwork Crow, The Velvet Fox, and The Midnight Swan, published by Firefly Press. But once we got there, we found ourselves fumbling around in the dark while Fisher made up her mind which direction she wanted to take us.
