About this deal

Draw an Art Supply card – take one of the four face up cards or the top card from the facedown deck. Take one of the large double-sided painting cards, place it on the easel, and place Bob on the first space on the painting track. I can’t help but find such a gameplay element funny in a game with Bob Ross in it, much less the word “chill” in its title. Does this 2017 release from Big G Creative paint a beautiful portrait or does it feel like a toddler’s finger painting? All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive!

These cards always feature a lovable quote from Bob himself, as well as some instructions that change the rules, always to the benefit of players.

So when I heard about a board game based on Bob Ross, a PBS art show and personality from the 80’s, I was very skeptical. But after playing Bob Ross: Happy Little Accidents with several different groups of people, I can say that this game seems to capture the spirit of Bob a little better than the first, even if there are fewer game elements than in the first.

Another small issue I had was with the similarity of green and brown paints, which led to a bit of confusion for me (having, as I do, some issues with colour blindness). After the voting is over, the squirrels are tallied, and the player with the most “little devils” wins!Demonstrating further that the publishers have gone to the nth degree with their component design, each player has a thick cardboard palette for readying their paints to apply to their chosen feature. The components are wonderful and there are several excellent touches even to the packaging design – with paints and tools shown on the inside of the box lid. A case in point is Bob Ross: Art of Chill, in which players compete to paint different features on a number of paintings that the late and much-missed artist created himself on TV show, The Joy of Painting.

My beef with the game in this vein is that there is not a player aid OR this information isn’t printed on the palette board for easy reference. Each player pulls a random slip of paper; then all players have 30 seconds to turn their scribble into a representation of the chosen word. Celebrate your creativity in this positive party game inspired by the wisdom of legendary painter Bob Ross. We have a great selection of board and card games for all and are always happy to offer recommediations too! Furthermore, you must have a card in your hand which has the appropriate tool as shown in the feature box on the painting.

In practice, it plays like an incredibly fast moving Ticket to Ride, albeit with no train map – and a few extra wrinkles to the play mechanics to give it a nicely thematic feel. Players collect color cards, play them to their Palette, and then use them along with a brush from their hand to paint features on the active Painting.
